Jamie Cox & Karl Sault Victorious In Season End Racing At Flamboro

The final event of the 2014 season at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway was the $5000 to win 125 lap Enduro and Demo. Derby. Congratulations to Glen Hils for planning a great event. It was my first Flamboro Enduro and hope this becomes an annual event. It was very exciting, a bit confusing as a scorer and was well attended by fans on a blustery and cool late October afternoon.

Forty six entrants were registered and lined up two by two from the start/finish line all the way back to the entrance to turn three. With the drop of the green they were off. A couple of reds early as the track had to be cleared of cars that were sitting in a dangerous position. Some cars were also DQ’d for moving under the red. Four  cars were at the front from the beginning, the 51 of Jason Tolton, the 70 of Josh Shantz, the 51x of Derek Moesker and 44 of Jamie Cox all ran up or near the front all day. Tolton and Shantz both got side ways and spun in turn three/four and may have cost them the race. Cox ran a clean race and as the checkered flag flew on lap 125 he was first to cross and was awarded the $5000 grand prize. Josh Shantz was second and the 51x of Derek Moesker was third.

The Demo. Derby wrapped up the day with just four cars making it out. The 98 of Will Larkin, 00 Bill Rutherford, 92 Kyle Neumeister and 81 of Karl Sault. Rutherford and Larkin were first out and the battle came down to Neumeister and Sault. The two were banging, crashing and pushing each other all over the track. The 92 car looked like I feel some mornings as it was dragging it’s back around the track but gave it his best shot. But the 92 could no longer go on and Sault in the 81 was the winner of the derby.

Congratulations to the #10 car of Jeremy Hughes. We pretty much unanimously voted his car the best appearing and he won the Hot Rod Hobbies Best Appearing car award and the $50 prize.

Mark Watson & Kevin Allen Win 100 Lap Features At Flamboro Speedway

By Randy Spencer – Day Two of the final weekend of racing got under way with Time Trials for the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series and the sixth and final round of the APC Auto Parts Challenge series between Flamboro and Delaware Late Models on a cool but sunny afternoon.

LOSC (presented by Meineke) had 15 cars go out for time trials and points leader Shawn McGlynn set the fast time of 16.546, narrowly missing his Flamboro track record for the LOSC which was 16.369 set two years ago. 19 Late Models were set to set fast times and when all was said and done, Jamie Cox set down the fast lap at 15.640.

The fields were set for the LOSC and APC 100 Late Model race. The Ontario Sportsman and Pro 4 Modifieds were on hand as well. Dwight Brown and Nick Lees won heat races for the Ontario Mods. while Brian Nanticoke took the heat race for the Pro 4’s.

After a brief intermission, the Lucas Oil Sportsman did their normal draw for top five positions, the “Fast Five” with a twist. Today was the “Elite Eight” and it shook up the starting order. After qualifying the order was 81, 24, 54, 6, 82, 18, 48 & 93. After the pre race draw it looked this way…6, 81, 82, 24, 48, 93, 8 & 54. The green flag dropped and the first caution came on lap 10 when the 18 of Chad McGlynn went off. The cars then ran for almost 70 laps caution free. On the 87th lap, the 24 of Mr Highside, Brennan Didero was running a fine race but his car caught fire heading into turn one and the red flag came out as emergency vehicles rushed to extinguish the flames. When the race resumed, the 81 of McGlynn who had pretty near lapped the entire field, wasn’t able to hold off Kevin Allen and the 54 car shot out to inherit the lead. Allen was able to hold off the pack for the last ten laps for his first career LOSC win. Shawn McGlynn was crowned
the 2014 LOSC points champion.

The Pro 4 Modifieds were up next for their feature finale of 2014. Aaron Turkey and Stan Pokupec were on the pole for this one. Pokupec, Turkey and Houghton battled for the entire race but the crafty veteran Pokupec held off the youngsters for his first feature win this year. Congratulations Stan!! The Ontario Modifieds were up to put the wraps on their 2014 campaign. Ryan Dyck and Alex Lees led 11 cars to green. Dyck led from wire to wire to pick up the feature win.

The last race of the night was the 100 lap main event and final race of the APC Auto Parts Flamboro/Delaware Challenge. Rick Burbridge and Shawn Thompson were on the pole after a dice roll and inversion of 11. The race started well and the cars settled in for a long race. The first caution came on lap 28 when the 23 of Shawn McGlynn and 96 of Dan Prudhomme got involved in turn four. A few laps later the 74 of Al Bowman climbed the wall in turn four just narrowly missing the flagman. At this point Thompson was in the lead followed by Burbridge, Matt Box and Mark Watson. On the restart, the 83 of Dale Shaw and 15 of Matt Lockwood got tangled on the front stretch bringing another caution. On the second restart Lockwood got mixed up again, this time with the 61 of Brent Wheller. Lockwood went off on the hook. A couple laps later another caution and leader, Shawn Thompson headed to the pits. He made it back on as the green was to fly, but now was at the rear
of the field. A bad start saved Thompson and he didn’t lose any laps. As the race neared halfway, Mark Watson was in the lead followed by Matt Pritiko and Quietstorm, Jamie Cox. They began to distance themselves from the pack. On lap 65, something appeared to brake on the 72 of Thompson sending him hard into the turn one wall and his APC championship hopes were dashed. Shawn McGlynn had some more woes as he hit the wall on lap 67. The next lap as David Elliott and Dale Shaw were heading down the front stretch, sparks flew they came together and both cars went hard into the turn one wall. On the restart, Mark Watson took the lead and the 21 of Pritiko was shuffled back to fourth. A caution on lap 88 as Justoin Demelo went around coming out of turn two. Cautions once again breeded cautions…the 56 of Robbie Thompson went around coming out of turn four. One lap later the 27 of Mat Box, who was running very well to that point, climbed the wall and came to
a stop bringing out another caution. the final six laps were very exciting and when the checkered flag fell it was thee #3 of the St. Thomas Express, Mark Watson crossing the line first giving him the overall APC Late Model championship.

That put the wraps on a very exciting season of racing at Flamboro Speedway. The staff would like to thank all the drivers, crews and fans who made it one of the most exciting in quite some time. We look forward to seeing you all back in April 2015.

Andy Kamrath & Shawn Chenoweth Big Winners At Frostfest

After a typical bout of October weather, the second day of Oktoberfest and Frostfest was on the card at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway. The two day racing extravaganza Oktoberfest was originally set for October 3-4th but Mother Nature had other ideas and the entire weekend was washed out. With a week off for Thanksgiving it was decided that Frostfest would run the Saturday for Thunder Cars, Mini Stocks, Pure Stocks and the Dirt Sportsman, and the final round of the APC Flamboro-Delaware Challenge for Late Models would be run on the Sunday and included the 100 lap for the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup series as well as the Ontario Modifieds and Pro 4 Modifieds.

First up on Saturday the 14th was Frostfest presented by London Recreational Contracting. Huge thanks to Mike Schmidt and all those involved with the London Recreational team for putting on a bigger and better event this year. Also want to say thanks to Clinton Geoffrey and Spencer Lewis for working so well together and making the event that much better with their knowledge and enthusiasm for the entire weekend. A total of $7800 in cash plus prizes was up for the Thunder Cars while $4000 in cash plus prizes was up for Mini Stocks.

First up was time trials for the Mini Stocks and Thunder Cars. Thirty Eight Mini Stocks and Thirty One Thunder Cars were signed up for the event. Bryan Sudsbury set the fast lap for Mini Stocks with a 17.899 while Shawn Chenoweth turned a 16.837.

We then moved onto heat racing with the Pure Stocks up first with Twenty Three cars signed in. Heat victories went to Jeremy Schindel and Josh Shantz. The Mini Stocks would hit the track next with a Dash for the top 10 cars in qualifying as well as two heats. The Dash went to Andy Kamrath while heat wins went to Blair Wickett and Russ Aicken. The Thunder Cars also had a Dash and two heats. The Dash victory went to Shawn Chenoweth and heats went to Brad Collison and Johnny Morrison. The Dirt Sportsman had six cars on hand and the heat win went to Gary Lindberg. Their Dash went to Dana Aikens. The Mini Stocks also had a B Feature with that checkered flag going to Paul Boyd. A note from the first Mini Stock heat race, the #13 of Mike Holmes who tied for first with Russ Aicken in regular season points chase had some hard luck carry over from the last race of the year. On a restart, Holmes car just died and all the cars behind piled into the back sending the
13 car into the wall causing significant damage and ending his day early. A very disappointing end to an amazing season for the Holmes team.

Feature racing was up and Mini Stocks were up for the first of two 30 lap features. Andy Kamrath and Bryan Sudsbury sat on the pole and led thirty cars to the green. With that many cars comes problems and six cars were involved bringing out the caution and a complete restart. The second try worked out better and they were off. By lap five, the 43 car had a flat tire and as he spun he took the 37 car of the Rabbit Rob Hoskins. Sliding across the wet grass down the back stretch, Hoskins was unable to avoid the fire safety truck as it came to a sudden stop. The truck sustained some damage but it was patched up and able to continue. The remainder of the race went caution free and Kamrath and Sudsburry battled each other throughout but Kamrath came home first.

Shawn Chenoweth and Mark Burbridge led 24 Thunder Cars to green. Working as a scorer, had my hands full and the race was a blur going pretty much caution free as the lead off the start remained the same after thirty laps with Chenoweth coming home first followed by Burbridge and Shawn Arnott.

Jeremy Schindel and Josh Shantz led 22 cars to green. The race started well but on lap 10 coming out of turn four the 0 car of Andrea Parsons took a hard hit in the drivers side door bringing out the caution and then the red. Parsons was complaining of some pain and tingling in her extremities and with the driver’s safety top priority, Hamilton Ambulance service was summoned. It took some time to remove Parsons safely and at that time two ambulances and two Hamilton fire trucks had made their way onto the track to help. She was removed and taken to hospital for observation. According to a family member she was ok other than very sore and lucky as well. The race continued after almost an hour delay and as the cars crossed the finish line 30 laps later, Shawn Taylor was the winner followed by Shantz and Derek Jackson.

The Dirt Sportsman made their way onto the track with Scott George and Gary Lindberg up front. George ran a great race and crossed the line first.

The second 30 lapper for Mini Stocks would follow with young Jake Watson and veteran Tim Tolton up front for this one. A good race with just a few cautions. Lap 16, the 97 car of Blair Wickett broke in turn four on lap 16. Bryan Sudsbury brought out a caution with a 360 spin on lap 17. It was a phenomenal save by Sudsbury and although he didn’t hit anything or anyone he did go to the rear for bringing out the caution. The final caution was on lap 25 when the 71 of Russ Aicken spun in turn three. Billy Schwartzenberg ran a great race. The former Flamboro Mini Stock champion showed he didn’t forget the fast way around Flamboro Speedway and took the checkered flag followed by Tyler Junkin and Andy Kamrath.

The final race of the night was the second 30 lap feature for the Thunder Cars. Lee Winger and Kevin Albers were up front for this one. One caution in this one half way through as the 29, 8 and 83 spun in turn three. Shawn Chenoweth made it a clean sweep winning both features followed in this one by Arnott and Albers.

That brought to a close the 2014 Frostfest. After all the results were tallied Shawn Chenoweth was the overall Thunder Car champ and Andy Kamrath was the Mini Stock overall winner.

Seven Champions Crowned In Bizarre Night At Flamboro Speedway

By Randy Spencer – One of the most exciting race seasons in recent memory came to an end Saturday at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway and it was a nail biter to the very end.

Going in to action it looked like two of five divisions would be close with the other three taking a disaster to change the face. Well that disaster almost happened or did happen in the Mini Stock feature depending which driver you were.

The night got underway as usual with qualifying heat races. Going into Pure Stock action, Gillian Hils trailed Shawn Taylor by 21 points. All she could do is go out and win and hope trouble would fall in the lap of Taylor. This was pretty much the story in all divisions on this night.  Well Hils did what she needed to do, she won both heats but Taylor made it difficult finishing second in both heats. In Mini Stocks, Russ Aicken trailed points leader Mike Holmes by 18 points. Aicken won both of his heats. Holmes finished third in both heats head to head with Aicken. That got Aicken to within 14 points. In the other two heats, Ken Stenhouse and Chad Ditner picked up victories. In Thunder Car action, Brad Collison went into the night with a slim nine point lead on Kevin Albers. Mark Burbridge and Collison won the heats. Albers finished second while Collison was third in the first heat and Albers was second to the winner Collison in heat two. This kept
things pretty much the same heading to the feature. Bill Pearsall and Robert Mercer took heat wins in the Pro 4 Modified heats. This pretty much solidified Pearsall as the Pro 4 Modified 2014 Points Champion. The final heats were for the Grisdale Late Models. The first half winner Shawn Chenoweth has moved onto the OSCAAR Super Late Models after the first half. The second half was a two car “race” with David Elliott up on Dale Shaw by a mere seven  points. Rick Burbridge and Dale Shaw picked up heat wins. Shaw picked up three points so the lead was narrowed to four going into the feature.

The intermission actually took place during the third Mini Stock heat. An injury in the pits delayed the race by about a half hour as an ambulance and fire truck were summoned to attend to the injured person.

Sam Heibien and Gillian Hils led a dozen Pure Stocks into their final feature event of the “regular season.” Hils was second and Shawn Taylor was fifth. The only way it appeared that Hils could be champion was if Taylor didn’t take the green. He did and Hils led for four laps but the 29 of Derek Jackson took the lead on lap six and wouldn’t surrender it. It was quite a move by Jackson as Hils and Taylor were one two. Jackson busted his way between the two coming out of turn four on lap six and took off. Jackson led the rest of the way, with Taylor getting by and followed by Hils. In post race inspection, Jackson was disqualified and the win went to Taylor, sealing Hils fate giving Taylor (from Burlington) his first championship by 20 points.

Sixteen Mini Stocks took to the track for the final feature of the season. With a fourteen point lead it appeared the only way Aicken could win was if Holmes couldn’t take the green or didn’t finish. Holmes started 11th and Aicken 14th. Blair Wickett started ninth in the field and quickly made his way for the front followed by Holmes and Aicken. As the original green fell, Wickett was called for jumping and would be penalized one spot at finish. That’s when the unthinkable happened. Heading out of turn four on lap seven, the 13 car of Holmes slowed as the field passed him by. The front right hub broke. Holmes, who had been on fire all season with nine feature wins, seemed to be a shoe in for the title. He didn’t have a DNF all season and it just goes to show that nothing is ever sure or official until the final “buzzer.” Aicken was on the move but he couldn’t overtake Wickett who had an amazing race. But as the checkered flag flew, Wickett was penalized
the one spot from the original start and the win was awarded to Aicken. A quick calculation put Aicken (from New Hamburg) up on Holmes (from London) by the slimmest of margins, one point. When it all became official however, the two were tied at 2,266 points. It also goes to show you just never know. Every point counts, no matter how trivial it seems at the time. I believe this is the second or third time there has ever been a tie in any division’s final points standings in its history at Flamboro.

In the Thunder Car feature, Bobby Mercer and Kevin Albers led the field to green. Albers trailed Collison by about nine points heading into the finale. Albers new what he had to do, win. He shot out to the lead of the start and started to build a nice lead. The real battle was behind as Shawn Arnott, Dave Bailey, Mark Burbridge and Brad Collison were battling in that order behind Albers for most of the way. As the checkered flag flew, Albers was first followed by Mark Burbridge, the Birthday boy Shawn Arnott was third and Brad Collison was fourth. Although Albers won and picked up three bonus points for the win and most laps led, Collison (from Cambridge) was still crowned champion, by just four points.

In the Pro 4 feature, Keith Dempster and Dan Petit. Dempster in just his second Pro 4 Modified appearance got out to a lead and seemed like he would pick up the win until a caution with two laps remaining brought the pack back to even. Petit had his second straight mishap in turn four in as many weeks. On the restart, Aaron Turkey got a better start and held off Dempster for the feature win. Bill Pearsall (from Toronto) was crowned Points champion although he had an oil leak of some kind on the last lap and he slowed finished sixth.

The final feature of the night was for the Late Models. With four points separating Elliott and Shaw, it was going to be exciting.  Nick Roth and Rick Burbridge led the field to green. Roth’s car seemed to be on rails and led from the start. Elliott and Shaw were battling close behind. As the laps counted down, Roth was still leading followed by Elliott and Shaw. As the checkered flag flew, that’s the way it ended. Nick Roth (from Baden) led flag to flag to pick up his first career Late Model feature victory. Congratulations Nick!! Elliott picked up one point on Shaw and finished with a five point cushion and was crowned second half Late Model champion. Combined, Dale Shaw (from Guelph) was the overall Late Model champ and was awarded the new Crate engine courtesy of track sponsor, Bennett Chevrolet of Cambridge.

That brought to a close yet another exciting night of racing, a bizarre one at that. With five divisions running, seven champions were crowned. A tie in Mini Stocks and a second half and overall champ in Late Models. Still lots of racing to go, most definitely proves to be lots of excitement still to come with Oktoberfest Classic Weekend, Frostfest and the $5000 to win Enduro event to close the season..

Taylor, Aicken, Turkey And Atkinson Winners At Flamboro Speedway

By Randy Spencer – It was the final night of regular racing for the Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds and Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway this past Saturday. They were joined by the Pro 4 Modifieds, the Mini Stocks and Pure Stocks. Both Thunder Cars and Late Models were away at Delaware Speedway for the APC Challenge.

The night got underway with heat races. Shawn Taylor won both heats in Pure Stocks. There was four different winners in Mini Stocks. Rich Schwartzenberg, Blair Wickett, Chad Ditner and Russ Aicken were victorious. Robert Mercer and Craig Shaver won in Pro 4 Modifieds. Mike Williams and Brian Atkinson were winners in the Canadian Vintage Modifieds while Lucas Smith and Rob Neely won heats in the Can Am Midgets. The B feature for the Midgets was cancelled as the weather looked threatening. A brief rain shower between the second Pure Stock heat and the third Mini Stock heat brought a half hour delay so that was the intermission other than a quick five minute break before features.

The Pure Stocks were up first for their 15 lap main event. Wayde Thorne and Gillian Hils were on the pole for this one. Going into the evening Shawn Taylor led Gillian Hils by 15 points. Two heat wins by Taylor and two third place finishes by Hils has really put the heat on the 32 car. Thirteen cars took the green and Hils led the first two laps but Taylor (of Burlington) proved too much and led the rest of the way to open his lead to 21 points going into championship night.

A couple of champions took part in this week’s Pure Stock action. The 2006 Mini Stock champion Ron Larkin Jr. was in the #26 car. “I love the Pure Stock division, reminds me of when all the Larkin’s raced the mini stocks in the past. I’m excited to see the new rules for 2015 to try and make cars equal in this division. You may see the Larkin clan back racing if all works out for the rules in 2015,” Larkin said. The other Larkin…Mike had this to say, “Larkin Racing plans to get a car for the upcoming Enduro race. We will put Ron Larkin Jr. in the seat. Be a test for how well we can make a Dodge compete next year in 2015. If all works out, watch for the Dodge’s and Larkin’s invade Flamboro Speedway once again. Glen Hils did a great job in creating this class. With all the new cars coming out for the Enduro, we hope that this carries on to 2015 and the Pure Stock division will have a huge car count. Names like Gallant, Larkin’s, Shantz, and many others
defiantly impact a competitive point of view for the Enduro and 2015.”

The other champion racing in a Pure Stock was the 2006 & 2013 Thunder Car champion Kevin Gallant. He said, “Had a blast driving it. Lot of fun. Building another now. Was a test run for the $5000 enduro. We will be building 1 more. Getting good at it now, have built 3. Lots of respect for that class…it brought me back to the days when you just show up and drive leave it on the trailer all week. And great to race against my wife.” A funny side note about Kevin racing against his wife Keara. Sitting up in the scoring tower, I saw Gallant’s hand out the window with a little wave as he passed Keara down the front stretch in one of the heat races. That’s what it’s all about…fun. The next feature was the 25 lap race for the Mini Stocks.  Rich Schwartzenburg and Rick Robinson led the field of 18 to green. Schwartzenberg who won his heat earlier led lap one. Jake Gilbert led the next couple but Russ Aicken was blowing the doors off everyone and was like a rocket as he made his way to the front quick. Aicken went into tonight trailing Holmes by twenty seven points. He shot out to a big lead but Holmes gained and closed in a little but Aicken was just to tough and picked up another feature win. It will be a tough go for Aicken on championship night. Winning tonight’s feature will put him to the back of the pack so he will looking for a big move early.

Aicken said, “As we head into the final week, I know I need to bring my A game. At this point, I can only focus on how hard I have to run and what I need to do. This is the closest championship race I’ve been in during my six years of racing. I would like to thank Mike Schmidt of London Recreational, Shawn Arnott of Automotive Truck and Tire, Shawn Turner and Bennett Chevrolet and all of my sponsors. Without their support, I wouldn’t here in the first place.”

Mike Holmes had this to say after the race when asked if he was nervous about heading into next week’s action. “Yes I am nervous but I am determined not to let it get to me. It is my first championship race (going in) where I am leading. It’s taken  4 years of racing, dedication and lots of homework to get me to this point. My competitiveness, want to win and racing with a great group of people including all of the Flamboro staff, has driven me to the point that I am now. Definitely lots more stress comes along with racing for a championship. You need to be on your game each week, go over the car after each race with a fine tooth comb for problems. Lots of patience is needed too. I would like to thank the people who have helped me to get here…my family, friends and sponsors all through the last 4 years that have helped me. I really want to thank my wife Angie for her constant support and my daughter Ashley who drives the 62 mini stock.” Here is a You

The Pro 4 feature had 11 cars take the green with Keith Dempster and Aaron Turkey on the point. Dempster, the former Can Am Midget racer and current Corr/Pak Sprint car racer at Ohsweken Speedway, made his debut in a Pro 4 and led early. As Dempster and Robert Mercer crossed the line, two cars further back in the pack, Josh Lassaline and A.J. Emms made contact and Emms climbed the wall and was taken off on the hook. Dempster held the lead through a few more laps and a few more cautions. Dempster was in one of those cautions and he along with Mercer were unable to continue. Tom Houghton took over the lead until heading into turn four on lap 11, the 33 car got mixed up with Dan Petit who took a very hard hit into the wall coming out of turn four. Aaron Turkey took over the lead on the restart on lap 12 and held off the pack for the remaining few laps to pick up the checkered flag. Turkey had a great year at Ohsweken in the 602 Crate Sprints.

Rick Schurr and Mike Williams led the Canadian Vintage Modifieds onto the track. Schurr led lap one but veteran Brian Atkinson made his way by and took over the lead. As the race reached lap 19, the caution came out as a quick and heavy rain came over the track. The checkered flag was thrown, calling the race early giving the win to Atkinson. The rain continued and the last race of the night for the Can Am Midgets was cancelled. It was unfortunate as it was the club’s final race of the year, the Harry Macy memorial race. Mack Deman was leading in points and was crowned the 2014 Lucas Oil Can Am Midget champion.

It will be the final night of regular season points racing. All 5 divisions are extremely close, so this will be the most exciting night of racing of the year. The final race of the APC Flamboro/Delaware Thunder Car Challenge took place Saturday at Delaware Speedway. Going in Branden Verhoeven led Shea Gemmell by 26 points. Flamboro’s Kevin Albers was in third, 39 points back. Branden Verhoeven won the first 25 lap feature while Chad Rijnen won the second 25 lapper. With his success in the event Branden Verhoeven took home the points championship for the Flamboro vs Delaware Speedway inter-track competition.

ROSS, Earl Seymour – At his home on Thursday, September 18th, 2014. Earl Seymour Ross of Ailsa Craig in his 74th year. Predeceased by his wife Bonnie Ross (2005). Loving and dear father of Faye Llewellyn of Montague, PEI, Liz (Trevor) Moore of Ailsa Craig and Lisa (Jim) Vanderwal of Ailsa Craig and father in law of Terry Llewellyn of Bridgetown, PEI. Loving grandpa of Mike (Jess), Kristi (Cory), Catherine (Josh), Richard, Mark, Sarah and Tori and great grandpa of RJ, Ryder and Ellie. Dear nephew of Pearl Ross of Dundas, PEI and Marion Matheson of Souris, PEI. Best friend of Jerry Thompson. Earl was an entrepreneur, a businessman, avid race fan and racer. Earl was the 1974 NASCAR rookie of the year and was inducted into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame as well as many other accolades from an incredibly successful career. He was known as “The Canadian Racing Legend”. Friends may call at the T. STEPHENSON & SON FUNERAL HOME in Ailsa Craig on Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held at the Ailsa Craig Community Hall on Wednesday at 11 am. Shaw, Westwood, Corcoran, Burbridge And Shantz Feature Winners At Flamboro Speedway

By Randy Spencer – With just three weeks left of regular racing action, we’re well into Silly Season at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway. The Late Models and Thunder Cars entered tonight’s action with just two nights left so with all points races very tight, it was and is certainly going to make for some exciting racing.

This night got underway as usual with qualifying heat races. In Pure Stock action, Shawn Taylor and Gillian Hils continued their great seasons each picking up a heat win. In Mini Stocks, Chad Corcoran won two with single victories going to Blair Wickett and Mike Holmes. Shawn Chenoweth won two races in Thunder Car action with singles going to Mike Gilmour and Mark Burbridge. David Elliott won both Late Model heats with Kyle Batty and Bryan Stevanus winning in the Ontario Pro Challenge series.

Shawn Taylor and Michael Kenny led the field of twelve Pure Stocks to green in their 15 lap feature. Gillian Hils won last week’s feature and was sixth in the field. Taylor led early and held off the pack for nine laps but a hard charging Josh Shantz was too much for Taylor and got by and held off Taylor and Hils picking up his first feature win since May 31st. Shantz (from Baden, Ontario) has been running very little this year in the Pure Stocks as he has focused his racing efforts in the 602 Crate Sprint on the dirt at Ohsweken Speedway where he finished fourth in the point standings this year.

Rich Schwartzenberg and Mark DaSilva were on the pole for the Mini Stock feature. As they took green an early caution as something went wrong with the 37 car of Rob Hoskins and he took a hard hit into the turn one wall. Hoskins has raced just a few races this year after breaking his arm in a farm accident. With a complete restart, Blair Wickett took advantage early and got out to a half a straight away lead. As the race wore on the lead started to shrink as Chad Corcoran (from Milton, Ontario) continued his hot night and quickly gained on the leader. By lap 20 Corcoran caught and passed Wickett and went on for a perfect three for three night.

Mike Gilmour and Kevin Albers led the Thunder Cars out for their 25 lap feature event. Albers led the race early but a caution on lap five as the 41 car of Bruce Wheller was leaking fuel. Albers led again but was challenged by Mark Burbridge who got by Albers in turn four on lap 11. Burbridge (from Brantford, Ontario) held off Albers and Shawn Chenoweth to pick up the feature win.

The Ontario Pro Challenge series made their final appearance of 2014 at Flamboro Speedway and Bryan Stevanus and Mike Taylor led the field to green for their 30 lap feature. An early caution as Justin Billington went around in turn one and collected Shawn Stones and Dan Alder. A few laps later, on lap eight,  Ken Lillycrop, Mile Westwood and Dennis Thomson got mixed up in turn 3-4 bringing out another caution. Westwood managed to make his way back up through the pack an on lap 23 he got past the 66 of Josh Nicholson to take up second spot behind the 20 of Mike Taylor who had been leading for much of the race. With four laps to go Westwood (from Milton, Ontario) made his way past Taylor and went on to pick up the feature win.

The final feature of the night was for the Grisdale Late Models. Jeff Ruddy and Nick Roth were on the point for this one. As the cars charged across the start/finish line, Roth and Ruddy got mixed up and Ruddy made a hard right into the front stretch wall. A tremendous spark show as Ruddy’s car climbed the wall and came to rest at the end of the straight away in turn one. The red flag came out as emergency vehicles made sure everyone was ok. It’s been a tough year for Ruddy who just recently returned to racing and won his first feature a few weeks back. David Elliott, Rick Burbridge and Brent Wheller all spun around to try to avoid the wreck and only Elliott was the only car able to finish. Although several cars were taken out, Dale Shaw and Elliott made it perhaps the most exciting action of the evening as they bashed and banged their way through several lead changes and door to door action. Shaw (from Guelph, Ontario) held off Elliott and picked up his
third feature win of the season.

That brought to a close yet another exciting night of racing. As I said there are just 2 weeks of points racing left for the Mini Stocks, Pure Stocks and Pro 4 Modifieds. The Late Models and Thunder Cars are off this week and have just one night of points racing left. Please check the website to see how close all divisions are!!

Please make plans to join us this Saturday September 20th, it’s open wheel night at Flamboro Speedway featuring the Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds, the Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets and the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pro 4 Modifieds. Joining them for an evening of excitement are the Klotz Auto Repair and Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks and the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pure Stocks. This will be the final appearance of the 2014 racing season at Flamboro Speedway of the Canadian Vintage Modifieds and the Can-Am Midgets. Racing starts at 6:30pm.
