It was the annual Memorial Night at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway and the fifth leg of the APC Flamboro/Delaware Thunder Car Challenge. Twin 25 lap features as we get close to crowning a champion.

The evening got under way with time trials for the Thunder Cars. Twenty Three cars took to the 1/3 mile oval to set the field for the first feature. Branden Verhoeven set the bench mark early going out third and turning a fast lap at 16.859. Kevin Albers was close at 17.018 and Shawn Chenoweth got close at 17.088. But Mark Burbridge would set the fast time just eclipsing Verhoeven with a time of 16.849.

With the field set for the Thunder Cars we got right into heat racing for the remainder of the divisions. Pure Stock heat wins went to, Shawn Taylor with two, Jaeger McMaster and Andy Wheller with one each. Craig Shaver and Brian Nanticoke won Pro 4 Modified heats. Mini Stock qualifiers went to Russ Aicken with two, Chad Corcoran and James Townsend with one each. Nick Roth and David Elliott won heats in Late Models while Ryan Dyck won the lone Ontario Modified heat.

With heats finished that brought intermission and with it being Memorial Night, there was a moment of silence and the names of those drivers, pit crew members and friends of Flamboro Speedway we loved and lost were announced. Approximately 140 names are now on the trophy.

The first 25 lap Thunder Car Challenge feature was up first. Mark Burbridge and Branden Verhoeven who set the top two times in qualifying earlier were on the pole. Burbridge shot out to the lead off the green and held off all comers. Kevin Albers was mounting a serious challenge when coming out of turn four on lap 16 the car lost power and fortunately the remainder of the field managed to get around without any contact and Albers retired to the infield. Chenoweth was on Burbridge’s bumper, followed closely by Verhoeven and that’s the way the would remain. Burbridge (of Brantford) led from flag to flag in a caution free feature to pick up the checkered flag.

The Pure Stock feature was up next. Nice to see 15 cars take the green, the largest field this year. Sam Heibein and Wayde Thorne were on the pole for the 15 lap main event. An early caution as the cars piled up coming out of turn two and Keara Corcoran and Mark Thorne got side ways and went around bringing out the caution. Heiben led lap one but was quickly passed by Gillian Hils and Shawn Taylor. The two have been battling for the top spot all year and continued again tonight. Hils of Dundas manged to hold off Taylor and picked up the feature win to narrow Taylor’s point lead over her to a slim 13 points.

The Mini Stock 25 lap feature hit the track next with Jake Gilbert and Chad Ditner were on the point for this one. Blair Wickett got the lead off lap one and held it until the veteran Russ Aicken took the lead on lap 7. Aicken trailed Mike Holmes by 28 points going into the night. James Townsend, a regular at Peterborough Speedway had a great run and was battling Aiken and Holmes throughout. Lapped traffic made it difficult for them to get past Aicken and the New Hamburg native picked up another feature win and closed the gap on Holmes by just one point. Holmes came home third. A big thanks to all the Pure Stock and Mini Stock drivers that traveled from Peterborough Speedway for tonight’s racing event. Hope to see them all back for Oktoberfest and Frost Fest!!!

The Pro 4 Modifeds were on the track next for their 15 lap feature. Robert Mercer and Linc Erison were up front and Mercer got out to a nice lead and it looked like he was on his way to a second straight feature win. On lap 9, Craig Shaver, Bill Pearsall and Mike Westwood got into a nasty mix up coming out of turn four. Pearsall wasn’t able to continue and Shaver lasted just a couple more laps. On the restart, Mercer looked a little eager and spun coming down the front stretch as his left side tires hit the wet grass and with that went his lead. Brian Nanticoke of Six Nations took over the lead and wouldn’t relinquish it and picked up the checkered flag.

The Late Models hit the track with Nick Roth and Rick Burbridge led the field to green in their 25 lap feature. Roth look unbeatable leading the first 19 laps. Not sure if it was contact or if someone got loose but the lead changed hands coming out of turn four and Dale Shaw took the lead followed closely by David Elliott. Shaw led two laps but Elliott of Stoney Creek took the lead from Shaw with two laps remaining and took the checkered flag. Going into the night Elliott was on top of the Late Model point standings with an 8 point lead on Shaw. After the dust cleared, nothing had changed and Elliott is still up by 8 points. A great race and great battle for the for top 4 spots.

The Thunder Cars second 25 lap feature was up next with Mike Gilmour and Shae Gemmell out front. The cars were inverted with 12th place finisher in the first race on the pole followed back to the winner Burbridge starting 13th. Mike Gilmour and Paul Fothergill led the race for the first 10 laps. A caution on lap 11 brought the field back to even. A couple laps later coming out of turn four the cars up front got mixed up and the the two leaders crashed. Fothergill hit the wall very hard destroying the front end and a flash of fire brought out the red. As the emergency crew put out the flames, Fothergill managed to exit the car but collapsed to the track. He was taken to the pits in the ambulance and wasn’t medically cleared. After the races I was told by someone that spoke with Fothergill that he had a broken leg. When the race resumed three Flamboro regulars were out front as Kevin Gallant, Brad Collison and Steve Perry led with Branden Verhoeven also in
the mix. As the cars crossed the line on lap 25, Kevin Gallant of Hamilton was first. Nice to see Gallant and Burbridge come back strong after a few rough outings over the last month. As the results were checked, Mark Burbridge was the overall winner on the night followed by Gallant, Verhoeven, Collison and Perry.

The final feature of the night was the 25 lap feature for the Ontario Modifieds. Rick and Rob Warnes led the field to green. A great caution free race was dominated by Rick Warnes who became the first two time winner this year in the traveling series. They’ll be back for Oktoberfest.

That brought to a close yet another exciting night of racing! Please make plans to join us this Saturday, September 13th for the final 2014 appearance by the Ontario Pro Challenge at Flamboro Speedway. Also joining them will be the Grisdale Late Models, the Ray’s Auto Centre & Towing Thunder Cars, the Klotz Auto Repair and Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks and the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pure Stocks. Racing starts at 6:30pm.

Nagy, Dryden & Ruddy Pick Up First Feature Wins At Flamboro

FlamboroLogo-300x176

By Randy Spencer

It was a night of firsts this past Saturday at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway as three
first time winners made their way to Victory Lane after feature racing. Congratulations to Hudson Nagy, Darren Dryden and Jeff Ruddy.

With threatening skies and a few brief showers during practice the night got underway with heat races. Shawn
Taylor won both Pure Stocks heats, Mini Stock winners included Jake Gilbert, Mike Holmes and two by Mark Klotz,
Thunder Car qualifiers went to Shawn Arnott, Brad Collison, Kevin Albers and Mark Burbridge, Late Model winners
included, Nick Roth, David Elliott, Rick Burbridge and Mark Watson while Darren Dryden and Chris Milwain won heat
races in the Canadian Vintage Modified series.

During intermission the cars and drivers met with fans on the front straight. Another brief shower wet the track but
it quickly dried up with just a short delay before feature racing.

The Pure Stocks were already lined up on the track in their starting order for the feature as they lined up to meet
the fans. Wayde Thorne and Gillian Hils were on the pole. The points race was really close going into the night with
Shawn Taylor leading Gillian Hils by just seven points. Hils got out to the lead early and held it for four laps. An
extended caution as the 61 car dropped some fluid brought the pack back to even. On the restart Taylor made his move and took
over the lead. As the race continued Taylor increased his lead and as the checkered flag dropped, Shawn Taylor (of
Burlington) made it a perfect three for three on the night and continued his points lead picking up his third feature
win of the season. You can watch the video here, http://youtu.be/Mx0Hw0sKmTo.

The Mini Stocks were up next. Nice to see a few more cars out, 20 took the green. Always makes a scorers life a
little more challenging!! Jake Gilbert and Chad Ditner led the field to green. Jake Gilbert shot out to an early lead but
a spin in turns one and two by Blair Wickett brought the cars back to even. That’s all Russ Aicken needed to shoot by
and inherit the lead. Going into action tonight, Mike Holmes had increased his lead over Aicken to 28 points. As the
race wore on Aicken managed to hold off the pack but an eager rookie, Hudson Nagy, was relentless and stuck to
Aicken’s bumper through out. Finally on lap 20, Nagy made his move.
Going into turns one and two, the two seemed to make contact, the 71 of Aicken got a little loose and Nagy made his way by on the inside. Lapped traffic made it difficult for Aicken and Holmes to get by and Hudson Nagy (of Hamilton) crossed the line first picking up his first
feature win of the year. You can watch the video here, http://youtu.be/HGsCovra6eQ.
Congratulations to Chad Ditner who took home an extra $50 prize courtesy of Mike Larkin of Larkin Computers.

Shawn Arnott and Bobby Mercer were on the point for the 25 lap main event for the Ray’s Auto Centre & Towing
Thunder Cars. These two have waged a battle all season.
Nice to see the “Flying Farmer” Kevin Gallant back after missing a few weeks. Arnott got out to an early lead and
looked very fast. He has been running great all year. The battle for second and third was exciting. Brad Collison
was leading Kevin Albers by just 11 points going into action and with just a few short weeks remaining, every position will
make a difference. As the checkered flag flew, Arnott (of New Hamburg) came across first followed closely by
Collison with Albers in third.

The Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modified 25 lap feature was next. Mike Williams was still on cloud nine after his
exciting feature victory the week before at Sauble Speedway.
He finished second in his heat tonight and lined up fourth in the feature. Darren Dryden, a rookie in the class was
racing just his third night with the CVM. Showing steady improvement, Dryden picked up his first checkered flag
earlier in the evening in heat one. Dryden led early but his first test came on lap four as a caution came out when
Adrian Donkers and Ian McIntyre came together at the start finish line. Some sparks and the 6 car of Donkers went
over the wheel of McIntyre. He came to rest in the infield and his night was done. Dryden held the lead off the restart
but another caution a lap later as Chris Milwain went around in turn one. The green flag dropped and Dryden (of Waterdown)
managed to once again shoot out to a lead and held on the rest of the way for his first ever feature win with the CVM.

The last feature of the night was the 25 lap main event for the Grisdale Late Models. Nick Roth and and Jeff Ruddy
were on the pole for this one. The race was an exciting one, and Jeff Ruddy’s car was on rails. Ruddy who missed most of
the year with some health concerns was racing just his fourth event this season. He managed to hold off a hard
charging pack of cars through a couple of restarts including Rick Burbridge and Dale Shaw. Ruddy (of Caledonia) a
former modified driver in New York managed to lead from start to finish and pick up his first Late Model feature win.

That brought to a close yet another exciting night of racing! Please make plans to join us this Saturday,
September 6th, it’s our annual Flamboro Speedway Memorial Night. There will be a moment of silence as the names of
those drivers, pit crew members and friends of Flamboro Speedway we loved and lost will be announced. Enjoy the
APC twin 25 lap feature as the Flamboro/Delaware Thunder Car Challenge returns for the last of 3 races at Flamboro
Speedway. Leading the point standings in the series is Flamboro’s own #89 Shawn Chenoweth with 788 points
followed by Shae Gemmell of Delaware Speedway with 768 points. The sixth and final race in the APC Challenge will
be held at Delaware Speedway on September 20th. Also joining the Thunder Cars will be the Grisdale Late Models, the
Klotz Auto Repair and Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks, the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pure Stocks, the Ponderosa Nature
Resort Pro 4 Modifieds and the Ontario Modifieds. Feast your eyes on the 1931 Packard that will join us to pace
the Ontario Modifieds heats and feature race. Time trials for the APC Thunder Car Challenge competitors will be held at
5:30 pm. Racing at 6pm.

Shawn McGlynn Dominates LOSC Feature At Flamboro Speedway

FlamboroLogo-300x176

By Randy Spencer

The Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series (presented by Meineke) made their third of four appearances at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway this past Saturday and Shawn McGlynn made it three in a row as he dominated the 100 lap feature race.

The night’s racing got underway with time trials for the LOSC. Jason Meyer set an early fast time, with a lap of 16.791. Chad McGlynn topped that when he turned a lap of 16.753. Dave Connelly did a little better going 16.671. Brennan Didero was third last to qualify and he went 16.462. Kevin Allen, second to last couldn’t do better than 16.618. Shawn McGlynn was the last car to qualify and eclipsed Didero by just .006 seconds to be the fastest car on the night. The remainder of the qualifying for other divisions was done through heat races. Andy Wheller and Shawn Taylor took wins in Pure Stocks, Hudson Nagy and Russ Aicken were victorious in the Mini Stocks, Shawn Chenoweth and Brad Collison picked up wins in Thunder Cars while Robert Mercer won the Pro 4 Modified qualifier.

During intermission, the LOSC ‘Fast Five’ draw changed the field. The top five qualifiers after time trials were Shawn McGlynn, Brennan Didero, Kevin Allen, Dave Connelly and Chad McGlynn. After the draw, the top five looked like this,  Kevin Allen on the pole followed by Shawn McGlynn, Brennan Didero, Dave Connelly and Chad McGlynn.

Feature racing got underway with Pure Stocks first. Gillian Hils was last week’s feature winner. She went into the night trailing Shawn Taylor by six points. She had to start at the rear of the pack. Michael Kenny and Bill Rutherford were on the pole for this one. By lap four however, Hils had moved up to third place. Wheller and Taylor were able to hold her off and as the cars crossed the line, Wheller just edged Taylor and Hils came home third.

The Mini Stocks were up next for their 25 lap main event. Jake Gilbert and Hudson Nagy were out front and lead the field to green. The two top drivers in points, Russ Aiken started fourth with Mike Holmes in tenth. As the night started Holmes lead Aiken by 20 points. Aiken charged to the front and was leading by lap two. Holmes had moved to sixth and as Aiken was heading down the front stretch the tie rod in the #71 car broke ending Aiken’s night. Before long Holmes assumed the lead and held off the pack to pick up his ninth feature win of 2014.

Kevin Albers and Bobby Mercer were on the pole as the Thunder Cars took green for their feature. Albers got out to the lead and as the race wore on the starter gave the black flag to Shawn Arnott. Albers continued to lead the race until lap 22 when Shawn Chenoweth got by Albers to take the checkered flag and picked up his sixth straight feature win. However in post race inspection, Chenoweth was disqualified for the night.

The Pro 4 Modifieds were led onto the track by Robert Mercer and Dan Petit. Mercer who won the first feature way back on April 26th has had some bad luck lately with a DNF, a DNS and a DQ in his past three starts. Mercer got off to a great lead and managed to hold the lead through a couple of restarts and as the field headed to the checkers, Mercer held off Brian Nanticoke for his second feature win of the season.

The final race of the night was the 100 lap feature for the LOSC. A spin by Doug Cathcart on lap one bought the field back to a full restart. Shawn McGlynn took the lead on the start and built a big lead. As the race approached the half way mark without caution, McGlynn was dominating the race lapping many of his competitors. Kevin Allen was in second and battling Brennan Didero but a broken rear end in Allen’s car ended his night. A caution on lap 61 brought the field back to even but McGlynn would continue his dominance once again lapping most of the field and as the checkered flag flew it was McGlynn winning his third consecutive race.

Elliott Wins the Battle But Pritiko Wins The War In Grisdale Finale

By Randy Spencer

Going into the final round of the Grisdale Triple Crown series for 2014 at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway Sunday, Matt Pritiko led David Elliott and Dale Shaw by a slim margain of eight points. Sixteen cars were pit side and after a postponment due to rain the day before, the racers and fans a like were ready for a great afternoon of racing.

Heat racing got underway at 2pm. Pure Stock heat wins went to Shawn Taylor and Gillian Hils. Heat wins in Mini Stocks went to Mike Holmes, Blair Wickett and two for Russ Aicken. Canadian Vintage Modifieds heat wins went to Brian Atkinson and Jason Keen. Four different racers won in Thunder Cars, Kevin Albers, Shawn Chenoweth, Shawn Arnott and Mark Burbridge. Qualifying races for the Late Models went to Rick Burbridge, David Elliott, Matt Pritiko and Robbie Thompson.

After an intermission, the Pure Stocks were up first for feature racing. Bill Rutherford and Wayde Thorne were on the pole. Some of the most exciting and close features this season have been in the Pure Stock division. Thorne led the first four laps but he was overtaken by Shawn Taylor. At the beginning of the night Taylor was first in points in the division followed closely by Gillian Hils, who trailed Taylor by just seven points. With just a few laps remaining, it appeared Taylor was well on his way to another feature win but a flat front tire slowed him down and he relinquished the lead to Hils. Gillian, a Dundas native, picked up her third feature win of the season and will make the point standings a virtual tie going into next weeks racing.

The Mini Stock 25 lap feature was up next with Ken Stenhouse and Mark DaSilva leading the field of 16 to green. Stenhouse held off the field for four laps but Mark Klotz passed him and held the lead for a few laps. Going into the evening Mike Holmes led Russ Aicken by 17 points. Between the two, Aiken and Holmes have picked up wins in 10 of the 14 features thus far in 2014. Aiken won last week and was further back in the pack and had to race for the front to catch Holmes. And that he did. On lap 8, Holmes got by Klotz to take the lead and from there he put some distance between himself and the rest of the pack. Aiken got up to second but try as he may he couldn’t escape lapped traffic to catch the #13 and Holmes, a native of London, picked up his eight feature win of the season.

Next up was the 75 lap main event for the third and final round of the Grisdale Triple Crown series for Late Models. A big thanks to Bill Grisdale and everyone at Grisdale Racing Products for their continued support of racing at Flamboro Speedway. They always put on a great spread in the tower in turn one and today was no different. Sixteen Late Models lined up on the front stretch for driver introductions by Ryan Reynolds and Spencer Lewis. David Elliott was on the pole followed on the inside by Matt Pritiko. Elliott would lead early and started to put some distance from the rest of the field. Thirty laps in Dale Shaw made contact with the wall out of turn two but he wasn’t any worse for the wear. On lap 41, Mat Box brought out the first caution and his day was done. On the restart, Elliott who dominated the first half of the race, still had the lead and was followed closely by Pritiko and Shaw. The three started to breakaway from the rest of the pack.

As the laps would wind down, Pritiko and Shaw couldn’t get by Elliott and as the checkered flag flew it was the Stoney Creek’s David Elliott coming across first followed by Shaw and Pritiko. When the points were tallied, Matt Pritiko of London was the 2014 Grisdale points champion by a mere 3 points over David Elliott. Dale Shaw was third.

Mike “Happy” Gilmour and Bobby Mercer were on the point as the Thunder Cars took the green for their 25 lap main event. Gilmour led the first few laps. “Killer” Kevin Albers took the lead on lap four and held it until lap 18 when Shawn Chenoweth (of Plattsville) would get by to take the lead and he would hold on to pick up another feature victory. The real battle in the last few laps was for second and third as Albers and Shawn Arnott were banging on each others bumpers making it an exciting finish.

The final feature of the night was the 25 lap main event for the Canadian Vintage Modifieds. Brian Atkinson lined up along side John Karley as the cars took the green. Atkinson shot out to the lead and would hold it for three laps. Heading down the front stretch on lap four, Atkinson made a quick left turn and skid to a stop in the infield and his night was done. Karley assumed the lead and held it for the remainder of the race. The white flag flew and as the cars entered turn one and Daryl Henwood blew his engine and slid hard into the wall. A large hole in the block and engine parts on the track were the proof of the blown engine. The race finished under caution and Karley was the winner. As he crossed the line and entered turn one, Karley got into the oil and slid into the wall damaging his tie rod. Karley, a Kitchener native, limped to victory lane as the feature winner.

That brought to a close yet another exciting night of racing! Big thanks to Spencer Lewis for helping out as guest announcer. Please make plans to join us this Saturday, August 23rd for another action packed and jammed packed night of racing. The Main Event of the evening will be the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Series, presented by Meinike Car Care Centre, with a 100 lap feature. Also on hand, our regular weekly divisions, the Klotz Auto Repair and Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks, the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pure Stocks, the Ray’s Auto Centre and Towing Thunder Cars and the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pure Stocks.

Flamboro Recap August 9th

By Randy Spencer

The Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets and the Ontario Pro Challenge made a return visit to Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway this past Saturday and the Klotz Auto Repair and Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks had a rare night off. Some exciting action was witnessed by the great crowd out to enjoy a beautiful night of weather at Hamilton’s asphalt arena.

Action got underway at 6:30 with heat races. Winners included, Bill Pearsall and Craig Shaver in the Pro 4 Modifieds, in Thunder Cars, Shawn Chenoweth won two with Brad Collison and Rob Istead also winning, Dale Shaw and David Elliott were victorious in the Late Models, Dale Wilson and Mike Westwood picked up wins in the Ontario Pro Challenge series while Adam Racine and Barry Dunn picked up heat wins with Adrian Stahle winning the Can Am Midget B Feature.

After a brief intermission we got right into the features. Mike Gilmour lined up along side Kevin Albers as they took green in the 25 lap Thunder Car feature. Shawn Arnott got by early and started to put some distance between himself and the rest of the field. Shawn Chenoweth of Plattsville, managed to track him down and got passed on lap 13 to take the lead and pick up another feature victory.

Late Models were next to hit the track for their 25 lap main event. Jeff Ruddy and Rick Burbridge were on the pole for this one. Dale Shaw and David Elliott were just three points apart, atop the Late Model standings going into the race. Shaw was charging hard to make his way to the front but got involved with leader Jeff Ruddy on the backstretch and both cars went around bringing out the caution. Shaw was able to continue but Ruddy had to retire to the pits. This enabled Elliott to take the lead as Shaw had to take up spot at the back of the pack. Tried as he would, Shaw couldn’t make up the lost positions and Elliott (of Ancaster) held off the pack to pick up the feature win.

The Pro 4 Modifieds lined up for their 15 lap feature race. Dan Petit and Josh Lassaline were on the pole and Lassaline, who has been gaining valuable experience started to make some distance between himself and the rest of the pack as the green flew and the race progressed. Bill Pearsall was being held back and looked like a cork in a bottle at times. Once he burst out from the pack he quickly gained on Lassaline. A caution when Aaron Turkey took a hard lick into the turn one wall brought out a caution. That’s all Pearsall needed and the veteran dominated from there on out and picked up another impressive feature win. Nice to hear how happy and appreciative he was in victory lane. Nice win Bill and that moves him into first place in the current Pro 4 Modified standings.

Seventeen Can Am Midgets hit the track for their 25 lap feature and as Josh Paxton used to say, “Only the best go four abreast” and the Midgets did just that as they saluted the crowd prior to taking the green flag. Four cars didn’t make the call for the feature and that was almost five. Apparently Tyler Turnbull lost an engine in practice but the team scrambled and changed the engine so he could make it out. Chris Holman and Tyler Turnbull were on the front row for this one. An early caution on lap one as several cars in the middle of the pack stacked up sending them to the rear of the field. Rookie Craig Pitchell spun in turn one on lap 9 bringing out another caution. Holman was leading till that point but as the field was back to even and he was unable to hold off Darren McLennan and he was the new leader followed closely by Rob Neely. With just two laps to go three cars were involved in a mishap in turn four and that brought out the caution setting  up a green, white, checkered finish. Another caution on the restart kept everyone on the edge of their seats waiting to see how this one would turn out. McLennan tried hard to make a move around the veteran Neely but it just wasn’t meant to be as Neely (of Milton) crossed the line first.

The final race of the night was the 30 lap feature for the Ontario Pro Challenge. Dale Wilson and Kyle Batty were on the point for this race. Just two laps in, veteran Tim Norris who has owned Flamboro over the years spun to the infield. As he tried to renter the racing surface his car came to a stop and the caution flew. The starter disqualified Norris and he was sent to the pits. A tight battle for quite a few laps after the restart between Wilson, Dennis Thomson and Josh Nicholson until Wilson’s car let out a lot of smoke and oil from turn four all the way around to the exit in turn two. This brought a lengthy delay as the track was cleaned. On the restart, Batty took the lead and battle with Thomson. Two cautions, one on lap 19 the other on 25 tightened the pack. Batty managed to hold off the veteran Thomson and Batty, a Stouffville native, picked up the feature win.

That brought to a close yet another exciting night of racing! Please make plans to join us this Saturday, August 16th for another action packed and jammed packed night of racing. The 3rd and final round of the Grisdale Racing Products Triple Crown for Late Models, with a champion being crowned. Also on hand, the Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds and they will be joined by our regular weekly divisions, the Klotz Auto Repair and Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks, the Ray’s Auto Centre and Towing Thunder Cars and the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pure Stocks.

Flamboro Recap August 2nd

By Randy Spencer – It was the Annual Kids Ride Night at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway this past Saturday and the weather which looked to be threatening earlier in the afternoon turned out great has hundreds of excited kids and their parents descended on the front straight for a chance to get some laps in a real race car. Donations to the McMaster Children’s Hospital were accepted as the kids went through the gate and onto to the track. Thanks to everyone for their donations and to all the racers that donated their time and race cars to drive the kids around the 1/3 mile oval.

Racing got underway at 6:30pm with double qualifying heats for Flamboro’s home divisions. Winners included, Pure Stocks, Shawn Taylor with two, Mini Stocks, Hudson Nagy, Mike Holmes and Mark DaSilva with two, Thunder Cars, Shawn Chenoweth, Dave Bailey, Shawn Arnott and Brad Collison, Canadian Vintage Modifieds, Jason Keen and Daryl Henwood and in the Late Models, Dale Shaw and David Elliott.

During the intermission, there were numerous prizes given away. Kids were given a ticket when they entered and Kids Ride Prize List included, 3 Gift Cards courtesy of Courtney Scott & Mike Larkin, Goodie Bags courtesy of Klotz Auto Repair & Engine Machine Shop, Gift cards & Flamboro Speedway hats courtesy of John ‘Crash’ Myers, Mark DaSilva & Leggat Cadillac in Burlington, Disney “Cars” backpacks courtesy of Amy and Emily Vigna-staff in the pit food concession, Disney ” Cars” Frisbees courtesy of driver Rodney Rutherford and 2 Kids Bikes courtesy of Flamboro Speedway. Thanks to everyone for their time and for the great prizes.

The Pure Stocks had their feature first. Matt Young and Wayde Thorne were on the poll for this one. Thorne led lap one but Shawn Taylor took the lead on lap two. After a huge cloud of steam or smoke in the 76 car during kids rides, the night looked like it may not go Taylor’s way. But he got the problem corrected and won both heats and got the lead in the feature. Taylor got out to a nice lead but Gillian Hils tracked him down and made it interesting throughout the 15 lap race. At the finish Taylor and Hils made it a drag race to the line with Taylor picking up the win by less than a car length.

Mini Stocks were up next with Ashley Holmes and Rick Robinson up front for the 25 lap race. The top two in points, Russ Aicken and Mike Holmes were seventh and thirteenth in the lineup respectively. Hudson Nagy, who sits third in points in his rookie season took the lead followed closely by Aicken. Nagy has really looked good this season and managed to hold off Aicken until lap 10 when the 71 car got by. Nagy wasn’t about to give up however and stayed on Aicken’s bumper. A caution on lap 13 when Chad Corcoran’s car came to a stop in turn four. Another caution a lap later once again brought the pack back to even. Aicken shot out to the lead again but Nagy was right there sticking to his bumper followed closely by Mike Holmes and Mark Klotz. At the finish it was Aicken taking the checkered flag with Nagy very close behind.

The Thunder Cars hit the track next with Bobby Mercer and Kevin Albers on the point. Albers and Mercer were battling for the lead and coming out of two Mercer slid into the infield on his own and flames were coming from underneath the car. The red flag came down and after a brief stoppage Mercer had his car going again to the delight of the fans in attendance. Kevin Albers was now in the lead followed closely by Shawn Chenoweth. On lap 9, Chenoweth got by Albers coming out of turn four to take the lead. He managed to build a fairly good lead and took the checkered flag.

Dale Shaw and David Elliott led the Late Models on to the track for their 25 lap feature. The cars put on a great battle as Shaw led early with Elliott taking over a few laps in. Rick Burbridge and Nick Roth also battled each other hard throughout. David Elliott crossed the line first and picked up the feature win.

The last race of the night was for the Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds. Daryl Henwood and Rick Schurr led the field of 15 cars to green in the 25 lap main event. The race ran pretty much caution free and Henwood was out front. By lap 20 Jason Keen had tracked down Henwood and set up for an interesting finish. A caution came out as the 33 car went around in turns one and dropped some fluid. With two laps remaining Keen made his move and got by Henwood and took the checkered flag.

Nice to see a few new faces and some “old” faces return on the night. Mark Thorne, father Of Wayde, made his debut at Flamboro in the #95 Pure Stock. Veteran racer Brad Rodwell made his 2014 debut in the #87 Thunder Car and always nice to see Phil Shaw back in a Vintage Modified. Shaw was a dominant for many years in the #0 car and was in for Adrian Donkers tonight in the #6. Nice to see some drivers out that race part time, Keara Corcoran, Rick Schwartzenburg, Chad Corcoran, David Elliott, Brent Wheller and Jeff Bean. Hope that some drivers who had some hard luck tonight back out, Bill Rutherford, Chad Corcoran, Kevin Gallant and Mike Williams in the CVM didn’t have good luck tonight.

Big thanks to Adam Ross for filling in as announcer tonight. A former racer in the Vintage Modifieds series, Ross writes for Dirt Track Digest and is an announcer on the NASCAR Canadian Tire series.

That brought to a close yet another exciting night of racing! Please make plans to join us this Saturday, August 9th for another action packed and jammed packed night of racing. The Lucas Oil Canadian Can-Am Midgets and the Ontario Pro Challenge series invade Flamboro Speedway and will be joined by our regular weekly divisions, the Grisdale Late Models, the Ray’s Auto Centre and Towing Thunder Cars and the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pro 4 Modifieds.

July 26th Recap *Revised #2*

By Randy Spencer
Round Four of the APC Six-Pack Challenge for Flamboro/Delaware Late Models was the main event this past Saturday at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway.

Rain delayed the start of racing action but 17 eager Late Model drivers were raring and ready to go. The Thunder Cars had the night off after completing in the fourth round of their APC Six-Pack Challenge last night at Delaware Speedway. In their place, the Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets were on hand and were joined by the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pure Stocks, the Klotz Auto Repair & Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks and the Ponderosa Nature Resort Pro Four Modifieds.

The afternoon got underway with Time Trials for the Late Models. Veteran Gary Elliott led off with a time of 16.678. Six drivers later, Flamboro’s Dale Shaw set the fast time with a 15.611. Jamie Cox of Delaware Speedway would better that time with a 15.573 and would manage to hold on to that time and be the fast car on the night.

The Pure Stocks were up first for their heat race and was a barn burner from the drop of the green flag. Andy Wheller and Gillian Hils battled bumper to bumper and door to door for all ten laps. They would exchange the lead several times and were never more that a car length behind the other. As the checkered flag flew, Hils edged Wheller by a half car length. Mini Stock heat wins went to Russ Aicken and Mark Klotz. The Pro 4 Modified heat win went to veteran Bill Pearsall. The Can Am Midgets had twenty cars on hand and ran some exciting heats with wins going to Lucas Smith and Adrian Stahle. The B Feature win went to Chris Holman.

After a brief intermission, feature racing got underway with the Pure Stocks. Bill Rutherford and Andy Wheller were on the pole for this one and Wheller got out to a quick lead early. Once again, as in the heat, Gillian Hils tracked down Wheller and the two made a repeat of the race earlier in the evening. Battling once again for most of the 15 laps, neither driver was willing to give an inch. It came down to the final lap with the two drivers banging away and inching along side by side. Coming out of turn four, Hils seemed to bobble slightly and lost the momentum and Wheller managed to take the win by a car length.

Mini Stocks were up next with Jake Gilbert and Mark DaSilva on the pole. At the beginning of the night, Mike Holmes held a 24 point lead on Russ Aicken in the point standings. Aiken won his heat earlier with Holmes was second, so basically no change entering the feature. Aicken took up fifth in the starting order while Holmes, who was last weeks feature winner, started tail in 17th spot. Hudson Nagy led the first six laps but couldn’t hold off a hard charge by the veteran Aicken. The New Hamburg resident was out front with Holmes on his bumper throughout. Holmes, who travels from London every week, seemed to bide his time as he got close several times. On the last lap, entering turns 3-4, Holmes made his move and got around Aicken to take the checkered flag for yet another exciting Mini Stock feature finish. Make sure you check the website to see the up to date point standings!

The Late Models were next and they lined up on the front straight for driver introductions. A dice roll of 9 meant an inversion so that put rookie Matt Lockwood on the pole with Nick Roth along side. As the green flag flew, a spin by Al Bowman brought out a caution and complete restart. Lockwood was putting on a clinic early building a fairly big lead early and would hold it until a caution on lap 44 brought the field back to even. It was the Rookie vs Veteran as Lockwood was along side Robbie Thompson. The two battled hard and were even for several laps until they got tangled and both went around. The starter gave the #56 of Thompson the black flag so they both would head to the rear of the field. Mark Watson was the new leader and he held on for a few laps. On lap 47, current APC points leader Shawn Thompson got involved with Adam Quarrie and Doug Pokupec heading out of turn two. Dale Shaw and Matt Pritiko were battling Watson hard and as the cars reached half way, Shaw had taken over the lead followed closely by Pritiko, Watson, Jeff Ruddy and David Elliott. Shaw and Pritiko battled it out over the next thirty laps until lap 90 when a caution came out and tightened the field. Another caution one lap later when Lockwood and Pokupec got tangled. Lap 95 saw Ruddy and Robbie Thompson bring out a caution and another on the restart when Ruddy got involved with the other Thompson, Shawn…ending their night. Lap 97 saw the hood of David Elliott’s car start to flap and out came a caution. Elliott made a qucik pit stop to have it removed and he made it out for the restart. a green, white, checkered finish make it interesting as Dale Shaw held off Matt Pritiko for the checkered flag. Rick Burbridge came home third followed by Mark Watson and Nick Roth to complete the top five.

The Pro 4 Modifieds were on track for their 15 lap feature with Robert Mercer and Mike Westwood up front. Westwood got out to a big lead early and would hold it until his car retired to the pits with mechanical problems with Robert Mercer taking the lead. On lap 12, Mercer too seemed to have something go south on his car as he spun out and hit the turn one wall and his night was done. Bill Pearsall held off Josh Lassaline to take the checkered flag.

The last race of the night was the 25 lap feature for the Can Am Midgets. Mack Deman, the current point leader at the start of the night was a car to watch as he had won the previous three features and four on the season. Todd Cresswell and Lucas Smith were on the pole for a field of 18 cars. The veteran Cresswell held the lead for the first 13 laps but an amazing pass by Smith heading into turns 3-4 and would build up a half straightaway lead and picked up his second feature win of the year. Deman came home third.
