Flamboro Beats The Weather On Saturday Night

Posted on Posted in '12 News

By Randy Spencer for OntarioOval.com – Mother Nature was threatening but the sky turned blue over Flamboro Speedway as it gets down to the nitty gritty. Five divisions were on hand and lots of racing was on tap.

The Ponderosa Nature Resort Mini Stock heat wins went to Scott Simmons and Russ Aicken. The Ray’s Auto Center & Towing Thunder Cars heat wins went to Bobby Mercer and Brad Collison while in the open wheel division, the Pro 4 Modifieds had two heats with Cliff Hodgkinson and Tim Tolton picking up victories. Grisdale Late Model heats went to Dale Shaw and Paul Howse. Ontario Pro Challenge made their final appearance for 2012 and heat victories went to Rick Seeley and Josh Nicholson.

The Mini Stock Feature race got underway with Glen Vandergeld leading the way for the first three laps. A mix up in turn 4 as Bruce Wheller went around and collected Ken Stenhouse, Glen Vandergeld and Jake Gilbert. On the restart Scott Simmons took the lead for a couple laps but Russ Aicken took over the lead on lap 7 and held it for ten laps. Dave Bailey took the lead on lap 18 and held it till the checkered flag. In the Thunder Car feature, Scott Laporte seemed to have the car back on the right track and led for the first four laps. But Kevin Gallant was just too strong for the rest of the field and took the lead on lap five and held on to take the checkered flag. The Late Model feature was a great race and it was going along smooth until laps 20 when three of the top runners got mixed up in turn 2. Steve Laking, Jeff Stewart and Paul Howse got together and brought out the caution. Stewart had some body damage and is was evident as the race continued and the drivers side window was covered as he continued. Steve Laking started to show some evidence of the mix up earlier and the car slowed and smoke from the back end was visible and a flat left rear tire was the result. The King of Speed Jason Shaw battled son Dale and nemesis Paul Howse and held them off for the feature win. The Pro 4 feature was led early by Ryan Hunsinger and later Dan Petit but the Silver Bullet John Verney regained his old form and took the lead on lap 6 and took the win. The final race of the night was the 30 lap feature for the Pro Challenge. Tim Norris and Dennis Thomson battled for the entire race with Norris picking up another feature win in the race that was shortened to 15 due to a rain shower.

NOTES:

Brad Collison and his team put in an estimated 180 man hours and about $2500 to repair the #13 Thunder Car after last week’s roll over. It paid off early with a win in the heat and a fifth place finish in the feature. Rick Burbridge who was also in the crash last week received more damage than was visible to the eye originally and it sounds like they have put the car away for the remainder of the season. Too bad as Rick had a breakout season with 8 checkered flags which included four feature wins.
Bobby Mercer picked up the win in the first Thunder Car heat, a great birthday present for his mom Melanie, a long time supporter of the track who was unable to make it out. Nick Roth made an appearance as the racing at Sunset was cancelled earlier in the day. In Ontario Pro Challenge action, Andrew Sloot made his first race appearance. He previously has raced snow cross and dirt cross. Chris McIsaac from the North Bay area also made his first appearance in the series. He has experience in karts as well formula and ice racing. Overall car counts were down tonight in all divisions, likely due to the weather.
