By Randy Spencer for OntarioOval.com – The second 100 lap race in five days was the headline race for the evening as the Lucas Oil Sportsman cars invaded Flamboro Speedway for their first appearance at the track this year.
Time trials were up first and thirteen cars readied for a couple laps each around the 1/3 mile oval. They were looking to beat the LOSC track record of 16.40 seconds. Jake Ott from Ayr was the quickest early on posting a time of 16.925 seconds. Jay Doerr of London, who raced in the 100 lap Gold Rush late model race this past Monday, bettered Ott’s fast time checking in with a time of 16.639. The thirteenth and final qualifier was Shawn McGlynn of Kitchener, the current LOSC point leader by a mere 6 points over Doerr. He managed to set the fast time and break the club’s track record at the same time with a fast lap of 16.369 seconds to take the pole for the 100 lap feature to be held later in the program.
Regular qualifying was up next with the Ponderosa Nature Resort Mini Stocks up first. Wade Watson was happy I’m sure to get his car back to victory lane winning heat number one. Dave Bailey ran a great race to pick up the victory in heat number two. Ray’s Towing & Recovery Thunder Cars had two heat races as well with Rick Burbridge and defending points champion Brad Collison picking up wins. The Pro 4′s ran two heats as well with wins going to current Pro 4 points leader Blake Bomberry and veteran Cliff Hodgkinson.
Intermission saw the Full Throttle two seater late model take to the track and the 1987 Flamboro Late Model champion Pete Bennett was at the controls. Several lucky ticket holders got a thrill of a lifetime taking some laps with the long time late model racer. The other item of interest was the Fast Five draw where the LOSC drivers were teamed up with 5 young fans from the audience. Each driver would pick one of the young fans, each who had a Lucas Oil hat on with a number in it. That number would tell where they would start in the top five for the 100 lap feature. Top five in qualifying were Shawn McGlynn, Jay Doerr, Jake Ott, Bob Merrifield and Derek Clark. But a no show was McGlynn and he was replaced by the sixth fastest Josh Wood (who ended up drawing the pole). With his absence it meant that McGynn had accepted the “Blast Floor Coating Challenge”. McGlynn would start from the back of the field and if he wins, he would get an extra $400.
Feature action got under way shortly after 8 pm with the 25 lap Mini Stock feature first. Wade Watson, Josh Shantz and Mike Holmes broke away from the field early on but by lap ten current point leader Billy Schwartzenburg took over the lead. It would be a battle between Billy the Kid and the four time and current defending champion Dave Bailey for the rest of the race. Bailey made it by Billy half way through and held on for his third feature win of 2012. The Thunder Car feature was a great race with Rick Burbridge leading all but the first few laps for his fourth feature win of the season. Between Rick and brother Mark they have won nine of the seventeen Thunder Car features this year. The Pro 4 feature saw 12 cars hit the track for their 15 lap feature. Rob Divenanzo was making a bee line for the front and by lap 4 he had caught the leader Dan Nanticoke and as the two came out of turn four they got mixed up and both went around bringing out the caution and both left on the hook. That left it wide open and Cliff Hodgkinson took advantage of it and he picked up his first feature win of the season completing a perfect night. Blake Bomberry still leads the way in the Pro 4 standings. Check them out at http://www.pro4mod.com/
The final race of the evening was of course the 100 lap race for the Lucas Oil Sportsman. Jay Doerr took the lead by lap 18 but it wasn’t long before the Blast Floor Coating car of Shawn McGlynn took the lead and began to pull away and won comfortably and picked up the $400 bonus for winning the race after starting at the back.
